KOTA SAMARAHAN, 16 August 2017 : International Conference on Development, Environment and Society (ICDES2017) is timely to provides a platform for the researchers and participants to share knowledge and ideas, said Chief Minister Sarawak, Datuk Amar Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Abang Haji Openg.

His speeches was read by Minister of Education, Science and Technological Research, Dato Sri Michael Manyin anak Jawong, at ICDES2017 opening ceremony, today.

According to Chief Minister, the theme titled ‘ Towards an Inclusive and Sustainable Future’ acts as an important reminder in order to achieving the developed nation status.

“ Hence, as Malaysia is moving towards a high-income and developed nation status by 2020, this conference is indeed timely.

“ I really hope that all forms of debate and discussion would ultimately bring benefits to the development of the nation as a whole and to Sarawak in particular,” he said.

Meanwhile, UNIMAS Vice Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi also hoped the conference will be an effective platform for participants, researchers and policy makers to share their expertise, knowledge and ideas to make the World a better place for future generation.

“ Today, the Faculty of Social Sciences UNIMAS (FSS) which is one of the first faculties to be established in UNIMAS is organizing a conference which is closely tied to one of the University’s research thrusts namely the sustainable social transformations.

“ I believed that each of the participants here plays a pivotal role in recognizing the development differences and the importance of embracing these differences,” he added.

The ICDES 2017 is organized by FSS and one of the main event in conjunction with UNIMAS 25th Silver Jubilee Celebration.

Specifically, the conference deliberations are on the themes of development theories, models and critiques, environment and biodiversity, culture, heritage and conservation, community and indigenous livelihoods strategies , technology and social transformation and roles of international norms, institutions and sustainable development goals.

The ICDES 2017 aims to provide a platform for academicians, postgraduates, policy makers, industry players and NGOs to have scholarly discussion and exchange of ideas besides promoting collaboration of cross-disciplinary research by providing an excellent opportunity to disseminate, share and discuss ideas towards an inclusive and sustainable development.

Two prominent keynote speakers had been invited to give keynote speeches which are Professor Datuk Dr Denison Jayasooria, an eminent academic as well as social activist in the field of social development and community works and Professor Dr Jomo Kwame Sundaram, an eminent academic in the field of development economics and have prestigious roles at the Department of Economics and Social Affairs as well as the Economic and Social Development at the United Nations (UN).
