    KOTA SAMARAHAN, 27th March 2017: The new cohort welcoming ceremony was held yesterday to welcome our new cohort from the Sarawak State Government agencies to UNIMAS Master of Science (Counselling) programme which offers by the Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development. The joint welcoming ceremony, led by Deputy State Secretary (Performance & Service Delivery Transformation), Datu Dr Sabariah Putit and UNIMAS Vice Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi. Sarawak State Government awarding fifteen Sarawak Civil Service officers with In-Service Training Award to pursue the 30 months postgraduate programme at UNIMAS starting from March 2017 to September 2019.  Datu Dr Sabariah Putit in her speech mentioned that the decision to award civil servants to undertake Master of Science (Counselling) is part of the Sarawak Civil Service (SCS) 10-20 Transformation Program under the HR Talent Management initiatives. “ The outcome of this will be a civil service manned by talented and wholesome individual that are professionally trained and developed, highly competent and very dedicated.       KOTA SAMARAHAN,  27 Mac 2017 - Program Sejenak Bersama Ulama’ 3.0 : Dato’ Ustaz Kazim Elias telah diadakan di Arena Gemilang, Bangunan DeTAR PUTRA, UNIMAS pada 25 Mac 2017 (Sabtu) bersamaan 26 Jamadilakhir 1438H. Program Sejenak Bersama Ulama’ 3.0 : Dato’ Ustaz Kazim Elias ini merupakan program anjuran Pusat Islam Tun Abang Salahuddin (PITAS), UNIMAS dan Canselori UNIMAS dengan kerjasama Majelis Dakwah Suraj dan Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar.  Program ini diadakan sebagai melahirkan rasa kesyukuran bersempena dengan Sambutan Ulangtahun Yang ke-25 Tahun UNIMAS dan juga merupakan program kesinambungan daripada Sejenak Bersama Ulama’ 1.0 dan 2.0 yang telah diadakan sejak 2 tahun yang lepas. Di antara objektif program ini diadakan adalah melahirkan rasa kesyukuran dalam kalangan staf dan pelajar sempena ulangtahun yang ke 25 UNIMAS, juga memberi peluang kepada staf, pelajar dan pihak pengurusan tertinggi UNIMAS untuk mengeratkan silaturahim serta dapat menyemai semangat cintakan ilmu termasuklah kepada masyarakat sekitar UNIMAS. Oleh kerana bersempena 25 tahun UNIMAS, pada tahun ini, penganjuran program ini diberikan kelainan dengan menjemput warga masyarakat di sekitar UNIMAS dan program ini diadakan di DeTAR Putra bagi menampung anggaran kehadiran yang lebih ramai.     KOTA SAMARAHAN, 23 March 2017 : A Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) has been signed between Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and Academy For Silent Mentor (AFSM) today to set up silent mentor centre in UNIMAS campus in Kota Samarahan. The establishment of the silent mentor centre are next to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in Kota Samarahan will serve as a complementary training centre for medical and nursing programs. During MoA signing ceremony, UNIMAS was represented by Vice Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi and AFSM was represented by Chairman and Founding Director AFSM, Professor Dr Chin kin Fah. “ We believe that the centre will nurture good humanistic values and empathy amongst the medical students in UNIMAS which are inspired by selfless acts of the donors. It will serve as a resource centre for their anatomy and basic surgical skills as well as soft skills module as the students will be the volunteers at the centre,” said UNIMAS Vice Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi.     Kota Samarahan, 21 Mac 2017: Projek “Rumah Cendawan PDK Samarahan” telah dirasmikan oleh Menteri Kebajikan, Wanita dan Kesejahteraan Komuniti Sarawak, Datuk Hajah Fatimah Abdullah bertempat di PDK Samarahan, Kota Samarahan, hari ini. Projek komuniti ini merupakan program yang diadakan untuk komuniti di PDK Samarahan yang terdiri daripada pelatih dan peserta PDK tersebut.  Projek ini merupakan projek jalinan kerjasama Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) dengan PDK Samarahan. Projek ini memperolehi tajaan bersama oleh pihak Pusat Transformasi Komuniti Universiti (UCTC) UNIMAS; selain mendapat kerjasama daripada pihak Institut Latihan Perindustrian (ILP) Kota Samarahan. Keutamaan program ini adalah sebagai penglibatan universiti kepada komuniti di samping membantu dalam meningkatkan taraf sosio-ekonomi peserta dan masyarakat sekitarnya. Menyingkap sejarah pengwujudan Rumah Cendawan ini, sejak tahun 2015 terdapat beberapa aktiviti yang dikendalikan oleh Ketua Projek UCTC bagi projek pembenihan dan penanaman cendawan, iaitu Prof Dr Sepiah Muid. Antaranya ialah Bengkel Pembenihan Benih Cendawan dan Bengkel Penanaman Cendawan. Kejayaan pelbagai aktiviti ini membawa kepada cetusan idea untuk mewujudkan sebuah Rumah Cendawan di PDK Samarahan pada tahun 2016.  Pembinaan Rumah Cendawan ini bermula pada awal tahun 2016 dan siap sepenuhnya pada penghujung tahun 2016.   Rumah Cendawan ini dijangka akan meningkatkan taraf sosio-ekonomi dan kesejahteraan hidup peserta PDK Samarahan.     CHINA, 22 March 2017 : Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) officially signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Yunnan University in Kunming, China for the establishment of the first Confucius Institute for Chinese Language Studies in East Malaysia yesterday. The MOU was signed by Chairman of UNIMAS Board of Directors, Datu Dr Hatta Solhi, while Yunnan University was represented by its Chairman of University Council, Professor Yang Lin. The historic signing was witnessed by the Chief Minister of Sarawak, Yang Amat Berhormat Datuk Amar Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, Governor of Yunnan Province, Ruan Chengfa, Sarawak State Secretary, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Hj Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani, UNIMAS Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi, and the Consul-General of the People's Republic of China in Kuching, Fu Jijun. The aim of the MOU is to formalize the cooperation between UNIMAS and Yunnan University in setting up the Confucius Institute of Chinese Language Studies at UNIMAS, which is already at its finalization stage.     KUCHING: Regular community engagement is a vital part of any project if the latter is to be successful and sustainable. Universiti Malaysia Sarawak’s (Unimas) Institute of Social Informatics and Technological Innovations (ISITI) director Prof Dr Narayanan Kulathuramaiyer pointed out that engagement between stakeholders and the local community must start from the very beginning until finish and possibly well beyond. “Clearly from today’s discussion, it shows that expectations are not managed from early in the project that in turn will cause many unexpected issues and challenges to crop up along the way and even thereafter,” he said.     KOTA SAMARAHAN, 15th March 2017 – Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS)  hosted the 8th series of Inaugural Professorial Lectures and the first for this year, by Professor Dr. Ismail Jusoh at PITAS UNIMAS today. This inaugural lecture is an overview of research findings that has been undertaken so far with the titled ‘ Wood : its benefits and versatility” The lecture started with the question “What is wood?” Then he move on explaining the origin of wood, its content, what it is made of and the elemental composition of wood. The next point discussed briefly was the forest resource base from which the wood come from. Properties of wood varies significantly because of its biological origin. The fundamental structure of wood from molecular to anatomical level, determines the behavior of wood. Another important property of wood discussed was natural durability of wood because it can determine its utility. Two laboratory natural durability evaluation discussed were soil block test and termite resistance test. Although wood extractives are not crucial for tree growth, but they are responsible for its colour, smell, natural durability, physical and mechanical properties, dimensional stability and acoustic properties. A total of 141 and 112 compounds were detected in Eusideroxylon zwageri (Belian) and Potoxylon melagangai (malagangai) ...

    SEBUYAU, 14 March 2017 : Local universities and institutions of higher learning are urged to conduct more field studies and research projects in the rural areas in order to assist the government with its rural transformation programmes. In making the call, Assistant Minister for Rural Economy (Coastal Areas) and Fisheries Datuk Julaihi Narawi said the studies could provide additional information and data to help the government in transforming the rural areas. “While the government has  data and information about the rural areas, more studies and research on the landscape and rural community are very welcome to assist the state government to bring development and increase the socio-economy of the rural people in line with our ‘Go Rural’ policy,” he told reporters on Sunday after officiating at the closing of an Interdisciplinary Field Course programme here. The programme held from March 2 to 13 was organised by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), University of Copenhagen, Denmark and Roskilde University, Denmark. It was participated by 43 students comprising 18 from Denmark, Spain and other European countries and 25 from Unimas, who are pursuing their Master of Environmental Science (Land Use and Water Resources) in the respective universities.
