 KOTA SAMARAHAN, 17th July 2019: The graduate employability for the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, UNIMAS, is averaging at around 85%, which indicates that the graduates from the faculty is in high demand from the industry.

Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs & Alumni), Professor Datu Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman said UNIMAS has smart collaboration with stakeholders, including industries, government agencies, communities, alumni, schools and others to ensure the quality of the curriculum is relevant with the needs of the industry by having Industry Advisory Panel to give feedback on the relevancy of the curriculum.

“ Align with the Minister of Education Mandate 2019, “university for community”, UNIMAS will continue our work and initiatives to bridge the digital divide so that the communities will not be left out in the Digital Economy revolution. Hence, today, we will witness two Memorandum of Understanding Exchange between UNIMAS and Croesus IT Solutions Sdn. Bhd. and Lotus Farm.”

He said during the launching of The 11th International Conference on Information Technology in Asia (CITA 2019) which was graced by the Chief Minister of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, yesterday.

He added that the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology now offering two new academic programmes, namely Master of Information Technology Management and a 3U 1I degree program through the Bachelor of Computer Science (Software Engineering).

The Master of Information Technology Management aims to produce students who are able to master advanced IT knowledge, skills and aptitude to meet the industry needs; being equipped with advanced IT theoretical principles and scientific methods to create effective solutions to problems, and able to demonstrate professionalism, as well as social and ethical considerations of their computing solutions in the global context.

“It will consists of a short study duration at Talinn University of Technology in Estonia and a joint field works with the Vrije Universitiet Amsterdam in Sarawak. The 3U 1I degree program, which refers to 3 years at university and 1 year at industry. The Bachelor of Computer Science (Software Engineering) will be one of the first in UNIMAS to be offered in this mode,” he said.

According to him, the curriculum structure, 3U 1I, will allow students to get maximum exposure from the industry attachment, in order to equip them with real world skills in term of knowledge and also soft skills.

Meanwhile, CITA 2019 provides a platform for experts from both academia and industry to discuss on the development of Information Technology with theme for this year is “Trends and Future of Humanising Digital Technologies”, encouraging the use of technology to improve the livelihood of humanity.

Paper submissions were received, mostly from Malaysia but there were also submissions from Nigeria, Indonesia, Thailand, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka and Yemen.

Among the Speakers at yesterday conference was Dr James Thom, who is a retired Associate Professor from RMIT University, Australia is presenting on “Big Data and the Fourth Industrial Revolution: Benefits and Risks for Human Society”, Dr Halimahtun Mohd Khalid, the President of Damai Sciences, Malaysia, who is also a Certified Human Factors Professional with BCPE USA, presenting her talk on “Humanising Robots for Human-Robot Teaming in Social Tasks” and Associate Professor Dr Xiuzhen Jenny Zhang from RMIT University, Australia is presenting “Combating Misinformation on the Social Media”.

From the industry, Dr Mazlan Abbas, the Co-founder and CEO of FAVORIOT Sdn Bhd presenting on “Where are we in the Industrial Revolution?” and  Mr Yap ThiahHuat, Co-founder of Archtron Research & Development Sdn Bhd, presenting his talk on “Artificial Intelligence in Image Processing Technology for Commercial Applications”.

Also present at the launching ceremony was Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Bin Matjeraie, Director, UNIMAS Board of Directors, YBhg Professor Dr Wan Hashim Wan Ibrahim, Deputy Vice Chancellor UNIMAS (Research & Innovation), Associate Professor Dr Johari Abdullah, Dean of Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology UNIMAS, Associate Professor Dr Dayang Nurfatimah Awang Iskandar, Conference Chair, CITA’19, Deans, Directors and Senior Officers of Sarawak Agencies.
