KOTA SAMARAHAN, 27th March 2017: The new cohort welcoming ceremony was held yesterday to welcome our new cohort from the Sarawak State Government agencies to UNIMAS Master of Science (Counselling) programme which offers by the Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development.

The joint welcoming ceremony, led by Deputy State Secretary (Performance & Service Delivery Transformation), Datu Dr Sabariah Putit and UNIMAS Vice Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi.

Sarawak State Government awarding fifteen Sarawak Civil Service officers with In-Service Training Award to pursue the 30 months postgraduate programme at UNIMAS starting from March 2017 to September 2019.

 Datu Dr Sabariah Putit in her speech mentioned that the decision to award civil servants to undertake Master of Science (Counselling) is part of the Sarawak Civil Service (SCS) 10-20 Transformation Program under the HR Talent Management initiatives.

“ The outcome of this will be a civil service manned by talented and wholesome individual that are professionally trained and developed, highly competent and very dedicated. They would have the capability, capacity and compassion the heart to serve rakyat and the government,’ she said.

By placing great importance in the welfare and performance of the SCS employees, part of the SCS HR initiative is to provide workplace counselling services by qualified practitioner to address issues with employees who are stressed, depressed, suffering from too much anxiety arising out of workplace related issues.

She also said that in the role of counselling becomes crucial for front liner civil servants because they must know how to provide counselling services to those in need as this is part of humanizing service delivery to the rakyat, by connecting, helping, caring and loving them.

Meanwhile, UNIMAS Vice Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr Mohamad Kadim bin Suaidi said the state scholarship of this program invested through UNIMAS is an honor and a trust given by the Government to university

With this opportunity, the Vice Chancellor congratulated the officers who have been granted a full sponsorship by the state government and welcomed them and do hope they will enjoy their learning sessions with us and complete their studies and mission on time.

The Vice Chancellor extended his utmost gratitude and appreciation to the Sarawak Chief Minister Office which have planned and made this endeavour of academic journey a reality for the officers.

“ We at UNIMAS will do our best to see that such a move will be further enhanced and continued to realize the state government aspiration to further improve its officers and personnel. UNIMAS commits to work closely with the JKMS for any future plan and engagement.”

The students will be exposed to contemporary counselling knowledge, skills and experiences by UNIMAS counselling educators and all lectures will be conducted during weekends every semester which to occupy the need of SCS.

Dean, Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development,  Dr Surena Sabil also mentions that the learning process will bridge the university-industry through engagements in the counselling practicum and internship.

The offered programme is structured accordingly to the requirements by the Standard and Requirements of Training for Counsellors (2011) as set by the Malaysia Board of Counsellors and Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).

The master degree will assist the students to apply their counselling registration and practice by the counselling professional body.
