SUNATHON PROGRAM IN KAMPUNG SEMERA, ASAJAYA
A total of 31 children from Kpg Semera, Asajaya in Kota Samarahan were circumcised in a ceremony held at the Semera Health Clinic. The program was part of the "Jom Sihat dan Berkhatan Anak Anak Kampung Semera", which involved UNIMAS, the Development and Safety Committee of both Kpg Semera Hilir and Masjid; and the health advisory panel of Semera Health Clinic.
For the circumcision program, the CMPH was helped by UMNA, the association for the medical and nursing alumni of UNIMAS, members of the Faculty of Medicine (FMHS), medical students and nursing students.
Their help was tremendously needed in assisting the surgeon and sterilizing the surgical instruments. This was a service learning opportunity for the students to get involved in handling a minor operation room on the field, where maintaining a sterile environment was a challenge.
The department would also like to thank those who had helped indirectly. The UNIMAS Trauma OT and the UNIMAS Health Centre had lend their surgical instruments. With the number of sets of instrument, we were able to run 5 operating tables concurrently.
It was a scene of a test of bravery and anxiety suppresion among the boys. Early in the morning, the boys were first grouped and showered with cold water. They were then briefed, given a pep talk and recited prayer before entering the makeshift minor operating rooms.
The whole programme started off with an early morning 10000 steps walk-a-thon around the village, a healthy cooking competition, a health talk given by Dr Drend, an MPH 2016/17 candidate and a health screen by the KOSPEN panels.
YB Ir Aidel Lariwoo officiated the function which was also attended by Assoc Prof Dr Asri Said, Deputy Dean (Post graduate and Research) FMHS and the leaders of both Kg Semera Masjid and Kg Semera Hilir.
