The Telecentre Programme for Orang Asli (TPOA) project, which is a research endeavor under the Institute of Social Informatics and Technological Innovations (ISITI), was recently shortlisted for the Technological Innovation of the Year Award at the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Awards Asia. The Technological Innovation of the Year award recognizes the innovative use of technology to improve any function at a university, be that at institutional, departmental or faculty level. The TPOA project, which was spearheaded by a team of ISITI researchers from multiple faculties and backgrounds of expertise, highlights the usage of technology at four Orang Asli sites in Kelantan and Pahang, and introduced both the Semai and Temiar Orang Asli tribes to multiple programmes designed for the Orang Asli such as training, tourism, agro-business, health, education, and documentation of indigenous knowledge.
