23-24 April 2018 - Together with a team from the faculty that consist of AP Dr Asri Said, Dr Ayu Akida, Dr Isabel, Dr Rekaya and Dr Paul, we visited the Fakultas Kedokteran (Faculty of Medicine) Universitas Tanjung Pura in search of the opportunities to collaborate in research and medical education. The faculty of medicine is the only medical faculty in West Kalimantan (KALBAR). They have a teaching hospital.

There are many reasons that we chose UNTAN as our potential partner. For one, they are the nearest foreign university that has a medical faculty on the island of borneo. It only takes about 35 minutes by flight to reach Pontianak from Kuching.

“Know thy neighbour”. Regional cooperation in this part of the world is equally important. Partnership with a neighbouring university allow us to complement each other in terms of research and students’ participation in teaching and experiential learning. So much is known about the distribution of the subtypes of plasmodium knowlesii and their link to the longtail and pigtail macaques in Sarawak and Sabah. What about Kalimantan? With UNIMAS’s laboratory capabilities and the eagerness of our potential Indonesian Borneo counterpart, there are so many low hanging fruits waiting ...

25 April 2018: Heavy rain and the late night did not dampen the spirits of the students occupying Kolej Bunga Raya, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) to learn life-saving skills. The team from the PAD committee and the Clinical Simulation Centre were invited by the management and student body of Kolej Bunga Raya to train the residents of the hotel in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) use. The evening session was divided into a lecture session and a hand-on practical session. All participants had the opportunity to try their hands at performing CPR and using the AED.

Since UNIMAS introduced the PAD programme and equipped the campus with 25 AED units placed in strategic public locations, there has been an increased awareness and interest regarding the device amongst both students and staff members. The PAD committee of UNIMAS will be rolling out a series of awareness campaigns and training sessions concerning CPR and AED use throughout the year.

23-27 April 2018, Faculty of Economics & Business, UNIMAS.

A volunteerism week, Titian Kasih FEP 2018 was organized by FEP Prihatin with collaboration from the Society of Marketing (SMART), Persatuan Mahasiswa Fakulti Ekonomi dan Perniagaan (PERFEP), Society in Corporate Management (SICMA) and AkUsahawan had successfully organized various charity drive, namely for Majlis Kanser Negara (MAKNA), Rumah Kanak-kanak Toh Puan Hajah Norkiah and Chesire Homes. Various activities included in the program are volunteerism talk, self-breast examination demo & screening and general medical checked up - Thank you to Pusat Kesihatan UNIMAS, blood donation drive - Thank you to Blood Bank Unit, Serian Hospital, cancer exhibition, booth sales (Henna, handicrafts and games), and lunch hour musical performances. Throughout the week various donations (cash, clothes, groceries, sanitary items & of course bloods!) were successfully collected from kind and amazing people of UNIMAS. We love YOU!
