KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak is developing guidelines and training module courses for the gas distribution industry in Sarawak. Unimas vice-chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi said the initiative was imperative to ensure the participation of gas competent persons meet the requirements under the Distribution of Gas Ordinance 2016 (DGO2016). “We are confident that, Unimas, through its Faculty of Engineering, and pool of highly qualified expertise and well-equipped facilities, will be able to produce competent persons to take part in related activities in gas distribution,” he said in his speech read by deputy vice-chancellor of research and innovation, Professor Dr Wan Hashim Wan Ibrahim at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) and Ministry of Utilities held at Rumah Universiti Unimas here. He said the university would be offering a few courses involving related activities in the gas distribution field under the Faculty of Engineering. “The university has developed several competency courses modules on gas distribution for low pressure gas related activities under the faculty. “Several courses will be offered including Gas Competent Persons Participation Course. This will require participation by all businesses with gas installations such as restaurants in shopping complex and laundry premises. “For installation of the low-pressure gas systems related jobs, the certificate requires participants to undergo a three-level course, namely Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3. “The certificate will be one of the requirements by the Ministry of Utilities for any contractor to be involved in the low-pressure gas distribution in Sarawak, including installation and maintenance system,” explained Dr Wan Hashim. The professor also emphasised that the university had compared several programmes offered at the national and international levels while developing new module courses for gas distribution training programmes. “Our collaboration with industry key players will ensure the development of all our programmes are tailored according to the current development of the industry,” he added.
