A free eye screening co-organised by Ophthalmology Department, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UNIMAS and the Eye Specialist Centre Kuching (ESC) was held at ESC on 4 November 2018 (Sunday) from 8am to 12.30pm.
The eye specialists who were involved in this event were Prof Dr Lim Lik Thai of UNIMAS, Dr Dennis Kong Ket Ming of ESC, Dr Lo Sheau Kang of ESC and Dr Lim Ching Wei (visiting ophthalmologist at ESC), supported by ESC nursing staff and optometrist of ESC and various private optometrists.
This event was attended by 215 members of the public, and the outcome included the diagnosis of refractive errors, 8 pterygiums, 89 cataracts, 13 glaucoma suspects, 2 diabetic retinopathy, 1 optic atrophy, 1 retinal vein occlusion, 1 blepharitis, 75 dry eyes, 1 age-related macula degeneration, 1 squint/amblyopia, 4 maculopathies, 2 epiretinal membrane, 2 posterior capsular opacities, 1 decompensated cornea and glaucoma, 6 posterior vitreous degeneration, 1 retinitis pigmentosa, and one lasered retinal tear. All these patients with positive findings were directed to the appropriate advice and counselling and management, with the option of referral to government health care facilities should they require.
Overall, this had been a successful and well received free public eye screening and it is hoped that such events shall be a regular on-going periodical effort to improve community eye care.
