KOTA SAMARAHAN, 6th August 2018 - The 14th International Borneo Research Council Conference 2018 (BRC 2018) has been successfully launched today at the Central Teaching Facilities 1, UNIMAS.
The conference was officiated by the Vice Chancellor of UNIMAS, Professor Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi.
BRC 2018 is organized by the Institute of Borneo Studies UNIMAS, together with the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development, under the flagship of the Borneo Research Council.
The Borneo Research Council was originally founded 50 years ago in 1968 for the purpose of promoting research focused on the island of Borneo in history and the social and natural sciences, with an interest, in particular, of bringing together work from different parts of the island and across disciplinary boundaries.
BRC conferences have been held on a biennial basis since 1990, with the very first conference being held in Sarawak and also hosted by UNIMAS.
In the years since the Council’s founding the scale and scope of research in Borneo has expanded enormously. “Translating the Past: Envisioning the Future” will bring together current research in many areas including:

* Communicating Borneo’s heritage through objects
* Culture, Music and Festivals
* Gender: Women and Empowerment
* Health Issues in Borneo
* Cultural and Heritage Management
* Borneo Language and Literature
* Making Oral Traditions Accessible in Borneo
* Narrative Pluralism in Iban History
* Spirits in the Natural Environment
* Community Development
* Social and Economic Studies
* Rural Technology and Infrastructure
* Geographical Information System
* Biodiversity, Environment and Resource Management
There are 140 participants, of which 35 are from overseas including from Australia, Japan, USA, UK, Indonesia, Brunei, the Middle-East, Africa and Europe. There are 130 paper presentations, organized through five parallel sessions.
Among the keynote speakers are: (i) Professor Dr Victor Terence King, a professor of Borneo studies, from the University of Brunei Darussalam; (ii) Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli Ismail, Chair of the Board of Governance at the Islamic Science University Malaysia (USIM); (iii) Professor Dato’ Dr Mohd Tajuddin, Director of Institute of Tropical Biodiversity and Sustainable Development, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu; and (iv) Dr Liana Chua, senior lecturer in anthropology at Brunel University London.
