PULAU SALAK, 31 MARCH - 1 APRIL 2018: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) together with Sacofa Sdn. Bhd. Conducted the “Scratch Programming for Kids” and “Introduction to Business and Digital World” workshop at Kampung Pasir Salak on March 31 till April 1 recently.

More than 46 participants including 36 school children from SK Salak aged 11-12 took part in both events, which aims to improve digital literacy skills of the fishing community.

For the “Scratch Programming for Kids”, the participants were exposed to the Introduction to Scratch; a drag-and-drop, block-based, snap-together programming language, where they learn to create simple animations and develop games. They were also introduced to mBOT, an educational programmable robot, where the participants control its movement through drag-and-drop programming blocks.

As for the “Introduction to Business and Digital World” workshop, the participants were introduced to the basic knowledge in business and strategies in marketing through the social media platform such as Facebook and Instagram. They were also exposed to digital applications that could help them to edit images of their products to make them more attractive to potential customers.

Sarawak based ICT infrastructure company, Sacofa Sdn Bhd has erected and commissioned a telecommunication tower in Pulau Salak, providing free WiFi access to selected sites at the island as part of their CSR contribution to the fishing community accessible by 15-minute boat ride from Pasir Pandak.

UNIMAS Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (FCSIT) lecturers conducted the workshops at the village and facilitated by the faculty students.

The UNIMAS Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, was chosen as one of the hub for MyDigital Maker (MYDM) CPD Center under the collaboration with Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDec).

The role of MYDM CPD Center is to increase the readiness in the digital knowledge through computational thinking (CT) and computer science (CS) teaching certificate program for teachers, outreach program based on digital making, programming and robotics for school students and as a reference point for Digital Maker in East Malaysia (Sarawak) zone.
