Faculty of Engineering SCUBA Diving (Open Water) Programme: A collaboration with Noor and Dayang Company Sdn Bhd

On the 22 of January 2018, a group of 21 engineering students from various years and departments have been selected to join SCUBA (Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) Diving for Open Water program organized by Noor and Dayang Company Sdn Bhd and Faculty of Engineering, UNIMAS. The head coach for the diving programme was Mr Suzaili bin Ismail, the owner of Noor and Dayang Company Sdn Bhd, who is also an experienced professional diver. He was assisted by Mr. Welly ak Giri, a professional oil and gas industry diver from Bintulu, Mdm. Ismarini Kartini bt Rusli, a staff from Department of Environment Sarawak who also an experienced diver herself, as well as three professional divers from Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (Sarawak Region), namely, LK1(M) Mohd Erzat Saufi bin Endut, LK1(M) Mohamad Asri bin Zainol, and LK1(M) Rosmanni bin Ramli. On the other hand, Dr. Nazeri Abdul Rahman, Deputy Dean (Student Affairs and Alumni), Faculty of Engineering, was the UNIMAS representative and secretariat for the programme. For the first three days of the programme, all the participants attended mandatory lectures conducted by the diving coaches regarding diving theory, techniques, and safety. The lectures took place at Faculty of Engineering tutorial room and prior to class room lecture, all participants are required to join the intense morning physical training. Then, for the next five days, all participants underwent training at UNIMAS swimming pool in which included intense physical training in the water, swimming and diving techniques as well as hands-on training on SCUBA diving apparatus operation and safety. On the 1st and 2nd February 2018, the programme venue was changed to Sarawak Aquatic Centre, which is located at Jalan Stadium, Petra Jaya, Kuching. The move was undertaken to allow the participants to experience a much deeper water at 5m deep as UNIMAS swimming pool is less than 2m deep. As 21 participants passed all the requirements for open sea diving at Sarawak Aquatic Centre, a sea trial diving test was organised at Satang Island water on 3rd March 2018. 

This test was conducted byLt Kdr (B) Hj Mohd Souafi bin Mohamed, who is a certified NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors) course director, and the owner ofAffila Dive, which is based at Kuala Besut, Terengganu. Lt Kdr (B) Hj Mohd Souafi was assisted by Mr.Hj Ahmad Sani bin Ismail, who is a staff from National Defense University of Malaysia (UPNM). For this sea trial diving test, the transportation from Passenger Terminal Express Boat Kuching to Satang Island water was graciously provided by the Marine Police Region Five (Sarawak). On the location for the sea trial diving, five firemen fromBatu Lintang Fire and Rescue Station were also invited to be on stand throughout the test. Gratefully, there was neither accident nor unwanted incident happened during the test. Overall, all the participants passed the sea trial diving test. On 4th March 2018, a simple closing and handover of certificates and licenses to the participants was conducted at Annuar BBQ Steamboat, Kuching. The ceremony was witnessed by Prof Ir Dr Al-Khalid bin Hj Othman, Dean Faculty of Engineering, and Assoc. Prof. Dr Azhaili Baharun, Director of UNIMAS Sport Centre. The NAUI Open Water license recipients are Dayang Noor Azie bt Abang Zainal Abidin, Dg Sharifah Rozellia binti Kamel Shariff, Mohamad Syafiq Iylia bin Jamadi, Muhammad Nurul Azam bin Muhammad Drus, Nancy Alpin anak Pating, Nur Jihan Nazihah binti Amin, Nurhidayah binti Adzmi, and Umang Jata anak Gilan from Chemical Engineering Programme, Barbra Cheah anak Gilie, Davidson Sating anak Riang, Mohd Nidzam bin Mohd Ali, Muhammad Izzat Syakir bin Shakeri, and Nur Sahira Binti Ibrahim from Civil Engineering Programme, Aaron Clay Jimel, Adarsh Philip, and Jeffry Masir anak Saton from Electrical and Electronics Engineering Programme,  Attalantha Jay Anak Jalim and Micthelle Gwendolyne anak Chubing from Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering Programme,  Dwenna Raymond Moloyos, Jr Hally Davidson Botoni, and Rahim Noor Bin Yusuf are from Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Programme, last but not least, Dr Nazeri Abdul Rahman, the Deputy Dean for Student Affairs and Alumni, Faculty of Engineering, UNIMAS. Since the commencement of the programme, the participants have established a new student diving club under the Students Association Faculty of Engineering (SAFE) in which they are proudly to call themselves as the FK Puyu Divers.
