KOTA SAMARAHAN, 27 July 2017 : The Malaysian Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences (MIMLS) held its Inaugural Borneo Scientific Meeting in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) starting yesterday.

The two-day meeting was held to acknowledge the members of MIMLS residing in Borneo and to emphasize to the local community the role of MIMLS in empowering and enhancing knowledge related to laboratory technology for the advancement of health sciences.

Medical laboratory technologists or commonly known as MLTs, are a group of allied healthcare professionals who work behind the scene and deal with laboratory examination of patients samples.

MLTs have been around in the country since 1900 or much earlier as Sarawak General Hospital was established in year 1870.

It is estimated that 70% of medical decisions regarding a patient’s diagnosis and treatment are based on laboratory test results which were performed by the MLTs.

The Chief Minister of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg believed that this group of allied health professionals whose work are rarely made visible to the public eye are crucial to public healthcare.

“ Your work is always behind the scene and not many people realize how important your work are for well-being of the society.”

“ Like everything else, the profession has to move abreast with time and I believed that you are taking the right step in rebranding MLT into biomedical science thereby making it possible for you to branch into academic, health research and industry,” he said during the Gala Dinner of Borneo Scientific Meeting, last night.

His speech was read by the Minister of Education, Science and Technologies Research, Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong.

The Chief Minister in his speech expressed his strong support to give due recognition to the MLT profession and upgrade their status to laboratory scientists.

He said the reason the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological was created during the recent cabinet reshuffle is to ensure the education system in Sarawak can support the State Government quest towards the development of digital economy.

Meanwhile, MIMLS is the professional body for the medical laboratory pratitioners in Malaysia. MIMLS is a member of the Malaysian Confederation of Allied Health Professional Associations (MyCAHP) which is an umbrella body for allied health professional association in Malaysia.

Internationally, MIMLS is a member of the ASEAN Association of Clinical Laboratory Science (AACLS) and also one of the founding members of the Asia Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (AAMLS).
