UNIMAS Won 1st Runner Up at the National UniMAKER Competition

Kota Samarahan – The Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) team with their project, “Optishrimp: Behaviour Driven Autonomous & Sustainable Shrimp Farming System” was awarded the 1st Runner-up at the national UniMAKER competition recently.

The team from the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology was represented by Mohammad Farhaan Iqbal and Khalif Amir Zakry, walked away with RM3,000 in cash, trophy and certificates. The project idea, which aims to help improve the utilization of pellets to feed the shrimps and to reduce shrimp farm pollution, was developed by the students and supervised by senior lecturer Dr Lau Sei Ping.

FCSIT was also represented by another team of students, Dhiyauddin Aiman Dzulkapli and Jacky Jong Jau Chu who presented their project entitled, “ProtoSense: An Incidence Aware Helmet”. For the competition, both teams were mentored by Dr Lau and Dr Sarah Samson Juan.

A total of 34 teams from various universities participated in the three-day event held at the Futurise Centre, Cyberjaya and Putrajaya International Convention Centre, with the theme, “Achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) through IR 4.0” from November 3-5 2019.

Organized by the Ministry of Education, the event highlighted the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR) theme that thrived the objective of synergizing physical, digital and biological applications through the participation and nurturing a new and sustainable “Makers” movement in Malaysia.

The main objective of UniMAKER is to bring up the aspiration of stimulating collaborative synergy among creative thinkers and innovators of various backgrounds of expertise to solve problems related to UN’s SDG Goals.


The first prize winner of the event goes to, UTeM team who presented their project, ‘An Assistive Mobile Application for the Visually Impaired' and walked away with RM5, 000 cash, a trophy and certificates, while USM team's ‘The Nelayan Care: An Innovation for Malaysian Fishermen to Increase the Prosperity, Security, Safety and Efficient Transport Cost’ won the 2nd Runner-up and walked away with RM2,000 cash, trophy and certificates.

Other highlights at the event includes workshops on prototyping, design thinking, pitching techniques and talks by companies on IR 4.0.
