Venue: Hotel Tanahmas, Sibu, Sarawak

Sibu, Sarawak – 30 teachers from selected primary schools in Sibu, Song, Kapit, Selangau, Meradong and Kapit area attended a 5 days training on Computational Thinking and Computer Science Educator program and Hotel Tanahmas, Sibu, Sarawak. The training, which is a collaboration between MDEC, Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), Sarawak State Education Department, Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research Sarawak (MESTR) and Universiti Sarawak with the objective to provide knowledge and exposure on Computational Thinking and Computer Science for the teachers so that it can be implemented at schools.

The subject on Computational Thinking (CT) which is a set of problem-solving methods that involve expressing problems and their solutions in ways that a computer could execute is being introduced at both the primary and secondary in all schools in Malaysia which is part of the 21st Century Learning paradigm that emphasize on problem solving skill, creative thinking, collaboration for students. Additionally, Computer Science courses has also been introduced to secondary school as well. The training introduces Computational Thinking concept, usage of Scratch programming tool to reinforce the concept of CT, and also various unplugged activities to express the CT concept.

UNIMAS has been appointed as the MDEC Continuous Professional Development Centre for the state of Sarawak since 2017 and have trained close to 240 teachers in Sarawak since 2017 for the training. The training in Sibu was conducted in two groups, led by Dr Dayang Hanani bt Abang Ibrahim and Associate Professor Dr Johari Abdullah.
