Student Association of Faculty Engineering (SAFE) has organised an annual sport competition, Dean Cup for a duration of 1 week starting from 18 to 26 November 2016 that involved four engineering departments, lecturers and office staff representative. Dean Cup 2016 was directed by Tan Ger Lian, assisted by IEM-SAFE and student volunteers from Faculty of Engineering.
Dean Cup 2016 was launched by Deputy Dean of Engineering (Industry and Community Engagement), Assoc. Prof Dr Hushairi Zen on 19 November 2016, accompanied by Dr Shahrol Muhammadan (Head Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing) and Sir Azrin (Advisor of IEM-SAFE) at badminton UNIMAS complex.
The aim of organising Dean Cup is to incorporate sportsmanship and strengthen teamwork between students, lecturers and office staff members. Besides, this program is organized so that the students do not focus solely on academic sector, but in co-curricular sector as well.
The sports that was competed for this year Dean Cup is unique than all previous attempts. Additional sport event; Squash and Jogathon have attracted more students, lecturers and office staff members to participate in Dean Cup's programmes.
A total of 8 sports has been carried out, Ping Pong started on the 18th at Cempaka's Ping Pong room, Jogathon and Badminton proceeded on the next day at Kompleks Sukan UNIMAS. For Jogathon, we are glad to have medical assists from 6 students from Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) as a first aider, they are Nur Aliah Ilham Binti Zainal Adnan, Lee Jia Ming, Syakirah Binti Mohd Ghazali, Nurul Ameera Binti Jamir, Noorasniza Binti Buang dan Nurul Izyan Binti Zainal Ariffin. On the 20th, Futsal and Track & Field events take place. Finally on the 26th, Basketball, Netball, Squash and Badminton Finals took place. The event was successfully ended with a short closing ceremony by announcing the overall champion.
Overall champion for Dean Cup 2016 has been announced at Kompleks Badminton UNIMAS after the Badminton Finals took place. The Trophy was won by Civil Department with an overall medal tally of 12 golds, 6 silvers and 6 bronzes.
