TRAUMA MOULAGE DEMONSTRATION IN CONJUNCTION WITH UNIMAS’ FMHS OPEN DAY 23RD OCTOBER 2019
A trauma moulage exercise was conducted by the Department of Nursing and Clinical Simulation Centre, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UNIMAS in conjunction with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UNIMAS Open Day 2019.
A total of 59 third-year nursing students participated in the trauma moulage exercise as part of their Emergency and Critical Care Nursing Course in preparation for their clinical practicum in the hospital.
The exercise was conducted in conjunction with the Faculty Open Day this semester to give members of the public and visitors to the Faculty a chance to observe some of the simulation-based teaching and learning methods employed in nursing and medical education.
Students took on vital healthcare provider roles in a hospital and pre-hospital setting which would be seen in an actual mass casualty incident. Students were tasked to setup incident management teams, pre-hospital care teams and treatment zones to manage a simulated building collapse due to partial structural failure involving multiple casualties. A total of 18 simulated victims were treated by students employing a full range of emergency and critical care nursing skills and competencies. The UNIMAS Health Centre teams were also seen rendering emergency ambulance assistance with the UNIMAS Auxiliary Police teams cordoning and controlling the incident site.
