KOTA SAMARAHAN, 23th June 2018More than 600 new students of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) took the pledge today as students of the Center of Pre-University Studies or Pusat Pengajian Pra-Universiti (PPPU) UNIMAS for the 2018/2019 session in conjunction with the Student Welcoming Week. This program was held for three days, starting from 21st to 23rd June, 2018.

For the 9th cohort, PPPU offers the three programs which are Foundation in Life Sciences, Foundation in Physical Sciences, and International Foundation in Science (IFS). IFS is a new program offered starting from the 2018/2019 session. This program is open to both Malaysian citizens and international students. This is one of the initiatives by UNIMAS to share knowledge to a wider population.

Students who enroll in these three programs will study in PPPU for two semesters. This is a preparation for students to further their undergraduate studies in bachelor’s programs in the science-based faculties in UNIMAS.

PPPU has produced highly competitive undergraduate students. Last year, the prestigious Anugerah Pelajaran Di-Raja and Anugerah Canselor were awarded to two alumni of PPPU during the 21st Convocation Ceremony of UNIMAS.

Programs in PPPU are not merely test-oriented courses as students will be exposed to leadership, entrepreneurship and community values. One of them is through PPPU's annual activities, Asasi Back To Community Open Day, which allows students to interact directly with community.

In addition, PPPU has successfully organized three Asasi UNIMAS Scienceploration Camp for SPM leavers and secondary school students. The program aims to inculcate interest in Science and Mathematics among the participants through appealing activities and experiments. The objective of the program is in line with the requirements and implementation of the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025 to enhance the knowledge and skills in STEM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics).

In order to reinforce UNIMAS’ image in serving the local community, PPPU staff went across Sarawak from Kuching to Limbang to promote the field of science and mathematicsthrough the Asasi Unimas Transborneo Roadmap 2018 program.

Along with the call for Industrial Revolution 4.0, students need to be empowered with the knowledge of science and technology to become more competitive and opportunistic in order to face the challenge of this era of digitalisation.
