UNIMAS signed two Memorandum of Agreement on commercialization during InTEX17

KOTA SAMARAHAN, 22nd May 2017: 10th  UNIMAS Research and Development Expo 2017 or known as Innovation and Technology Expo (InTEX17) was held on 18th May 2017 in Universiti Malaysia Sarawak. It was a day for researchers of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) to shine at the expo as they competed for the title of Best R&D product.

The event was organized by UNIMAS INNOVATION with the theme of “Strengthening Research and Innovation for Communities Sustainability”. InTEX17 this year is also one of the event which is organized in line with the celebration of 25th Silver Jubilee UNIMAS.

311 innovative and creative products from different fields of research which are clustered into social science and humanities, technology and engineering, pure and applied science  and information and communication technology were showcased.

Assistant Minister of Education and Technological Research, and Assistant Minister of Housing and Public Health, YB Dr Annuar Rapaee who launched the expo, said with the rapid changes in the globalization process of science and technology, it is a necessity for younger generation to equip themselves with science and technology so that they could adapt to the ability to make adjustments, innovation and investments of modern technology.

“Sarawak government encourages and fully supports the efforts done by UNIMAS and fully confident that InTEX17 will enhance the research culture and the transformation of research products to benefit of the communities" he said.

UNIMAS Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof Mohd Fadhzil Abdul Rahman said UNIMAS INNOVATION’s efforts in organizing the expo could serve as a platform to elevate the transformation of research, protection of intellectual property and drive the efforts of the product development towards commercialization. In line with the announcement from the Ministry of Higher Education, announcing 2017 as the year of "Translational Research", UNIMAS has pursued with collaborative initiatives to fully implement the whole spectrum of research.

He hoped the researchers of UNIMAS would not only focus on producing but also increase the strategic collaboration with fellow scholars in and outside of the country as well as publishing journals and scientific papers to increase the credibility of the researchers and to benefit the communities.

48 products have been announced as Gold Medals, 74 Silver and 108 Bronze for this year InTEX17.

In conjunction with InTEX17, two memorandums of agreement on commercialization were materialized on 17th May 2017 which involve the commercialization of products by UNIMAS researchers.

“UNIMAS current trend and focus of research will be on translational research, research that brings positive impact to the local, national and international communities,” said Prof Dr Kopli Bujang, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation UNIMAS, who also witnessed both signings.

The first product is the DBPRO or Dead Body Protector is a product that is designed to protect and act as a cover to dead bodies during accidents and any mishaps. The DBPRO project is led by UNIMAS, Associate Prof Dr Saiful Bahari Mohd Yusoff and assisted by En Shaiful Husni Zulkifli (UNIMAS) and Puan Zalina Ibrahim (UiTM Sarawak).

The second product is The Borneo Natural Cosmetics product. These products which consists of day and night cream, serum and mist are cosmeceutical care products that are specially formulated using Borneo indigenous natural ingredients. The Borneo Natural Cosmetics products development is led by UNIMAS, Assoc Prof Dr Awg Ahmad Sallehin Awg Husaini and Mohd Razip Asaruddin and assisted by Fathan Soetrisno and Mohd Firdaus Abong Abdullah (UCTS).

The cosmeceutical products will be licensed to Duuja Trading Sdn Bhd for commercialization under the brand ARO Cosmetics. As for the DBPRO product, it will receive a signing agreement between UNIMAS and JSMAT Construction & Services Sdn Bhd to produce the DBPRO to the mass market.

For the signing, UNIMAS was represented by Mr Ang Chee Hoon of UNIMAS Holdings. Apart from the signing of the Memorandum, both projects received a cheque of RM20,000 from their respective industrial partners.

Also present was Prof Dr Lo May Chiun, Director of Research and Innovation Management Centre, UNIMAS and representatives from both industrial partners.
