On 23rd October until 27th October 2016, a total of 45 undergraduate students from the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering went to sites visits at the vicinity of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The sites are SPR Energy Sdn Bhd, Universiti Malaysia Sabah and Poring Hot Springs. The site visits were accompanied by two lecturers from the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Ir Dr Danial Ibrahim and Mr Abang Mohamad Aizuddin Abang Mohd Mohtar. The objective of these three site visits are to exposed the students with various surroundings regarding with their field of study related to Thermodynamics II subject, and the actual engineering practices in the industrial world. The trip was also aimed at introducing the new atmosphere of other university in Malaysia to the participating students.

SPR Energy Sdn Bhd is a combined-cycle gas turbine power plant that provides electricity together with the Kimanis Power Plant to state of Sabah. The power plant has the capacity to generate 100MW of electricity. The plant has a combination of Rankine and Brayton cycle which is much more efficient and cleaner compared to diesel fueled oil power plant. The students were introduced to the area around the power plant and also the control room where they get to see how the plant actually works.

The second trip is to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) whereby the students visited three out of ten faculties in UMS, which includes Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Medicine and Health Science, and Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage. The trip started with a brief introduction by the head of Mechanical Department. The entourage was then visiting all the laboratories at the Mechanical Department. The students also visited the Ibnu Sina Resources Centre in Faculty of Medicine and Health Science. The center is filled with real durable materials such as human bodies, babies, organs and others. Then, the entourage continued to the of Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage. The full view of the faculty was impressive as UMS students portrayed a really good aesthetic and artistic value in their masterpieces. Apart from that, the entourage went to the Chancellery building of UMS. The Chancellery building, also known as the Twin Tower among the community, is located at the top of UMS hill. The students also visited the Borneesis gallery near to the chancellery building. The gallery shows a lot of species and other things that can be found in Sabah or Borneo. The view on the top hill was spectacular as the sea can be seen and all around the UMS. Lastly, the entourage went to the  UMS Outdoor Development Centre (ODEC) Beach, the university's own seaside and beach near to the UMS jetty.

The last visit was at Poring Hot Spring which is located about 13 kilometers away from Ranau or about 40km away from the Kinabalu National Park. The name “Poring” comes from a Kadazan word for bamboo as they are the species that covered the area. Besides, this hot spring produces geothermal heated groundwater from the Earth’s crust. The students were exposed to the Japanese style hot tubs and the hot waters of the spring that contains sulphuric minerals which helps to soothe aching muscles. The hot sulphur water is formed by the less violent formation of non-volcanic heat from below the hot spring area. The hot spring has only one source which is from the big boulder near the open air bathtub area. The temperature of the hot water from the source can reached from 50 to 100 depending on the weather.

We would like to express our gratitude and appreciation to SPR Energy Sdn Bhd, University Malaysia Sabah and Poring Hot Spring for hosting us those days.
