Kuala Lumpur, 24th October 2016 : ‘Location-based Augmented Reality System for Utilities Infrastructure Management: Presenting LARA System to South East Asia’ provided by LARA project team of UNIMAS and was officiated by YB Datuk Dr. Abu Bakar Mohamad Diah, Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) on 20th October in conjunction with 22nd International Conference on Virtual Systems & Multimedia (VSMM) at Sunway University, Kuala Lumpur.

Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International), Prof Dr Wan Hashim Wan Ibrahim also attended the event.

LARA has received funding from the European GNSS Agency under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

The objective of LARA project is to develop a mobile device to assist the utility management professionals on the field. The hand-held, low cost, mobile device will integrate state-of-the-art technologies in the domain of positioning and sensors (GNSS), Augmented Reality (AR) and 3D GIS geo-databases. The LARA system will guide utility field workers by helping them ‘see’ beneath the ground, rendering the complexity of the 3D models of the underground grid such as water, gas and electricity. The system leverages upon Europe GNSS (Global Satellite Navigation System) - Galileo and EGNOS functionality.

This project is leading by Dr. Stratos Styliandis, from a SME organization – Geo Imaging Ltd., - located in Cyprus.

LARA project consists of 9 partners. 8 institutions are from the EU countries; and the only non-EU country is Malaysia via UNIMAS participation in this research programme since 2015.
