KOTA SAMARAHAN,  27th September 2016 : Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) has been selected as a host of the friendship games higher educational institutes between Thailand and Malaysia, The 9th Thailand-Malaysia Annual Varsity Games 2016 which was  held on 23-27 September 2016.

 

Athletes from both countries competed in three tournament namely netball, sepak takraw and badminton.

 

This sporting event promotes relations between students, staff and faculty members in higher educational institutes including executives from the Office of the Higher Education Commission of Thailand and Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia.

 

Annual Sports Tournament Between Malaysia-Thailand (MAS-THAI) 2016 is an annual event that is considered as a bond to enforcement bilateral relations between Malaysia and Thailand in addition to creating a closer bond of friendship through sports.

 

Meanwhile, the cultural performance nite was attended by Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) Malaysia, Sports Division Under Secretary, Mr. Hazally Jali, Former General Secretary, Ministry of Education Thailand, Dr Sumate Yamnon, Ministry of Higher Education Thailand, Office of Higher Commission (OHEC) Secretary, Mr. Chatchai Srivilai and Vice Chancellor UNIMAS, Professor Dato’ Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi, last night.

 

The varsity games kicked off in 2008 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and subsequently Thailand and Malaysia have agreed to alternatively host the event.

 

This annual sporting event continues to enhance both academic and athletic cooperation, building stronger ties between the nations.

 

The objectives of this events as an important instrument in helping to maintain and enhance the mutual understanding between students comradeship Malaysia and Thailand participated in this tournament.

 

It was also to creating a better relationship for regional participation in the ASEAN countries and develop cooperation for the benefit of students, strengthen the sports foundation for the design and implementation of programs for students in higher levels in certain sports and lastly to implement strategies that will enable the transformation of culture through sport.
