FEB AnnahRaisAPMMC2016 1

On the 18th of March 2016, a Post Conference Tour to Annah Rais Longhouse in Padawan was held for the participants and the committee members of the 6th APMMC 2016. The journey to the long house started as early as 7 in the morning from the Faculty of Economics and Business to pick up participants who stayed in Kuching Hilton Hotel and Tune Hotel. Afterwards, the bus took off to Annah Rais Longhouse and it took approximately 1 hour 15 minutes to reach the destination.

Upon reaching the Longhouse, the participants were greeted by Mr. Akam the tour guide who then led the group for the tour along the longhouse. At the entrance of the longhouse, all participants of the tour were greeted and offered a rice wine as it is part of the Bidayuh’s tradition to welcome a guest at their longhouse. After the welcoming ceremony, the tour continued. Mr. Akam shared various stories and legend about the village, their heritage and culture. One of the most fascinating parts of the longhouse is the Headhouse or ‘Panggah’ who shared the tales of their warriors and the reason behind the headhunting activities during those days. The participants also had the chance to try some local fruits sold by the villagers.

The tour then stops at Mr. Akam’s house to take a tea break where all participants were served with local tree bark tea and kuih-muih. At the same time, participants enjoy watching the cultural dance performed by the local dancers and musicians. The musicians also shared a brief history of the musical instruments played by the Bidayuh community. The participants were then participating in the blowpipe games and the cultural dance. After the break, the tour continued to explore the other longhouses that are also in the same village.

Participants and the committee members then had their lunch at Mr. Akam house again where they served traditional foods such as rice cooked in bamboo, ayam pansuh, steamed ikan sultan and many more. After the lunch, the tour headed back to Kuching and UNIMAS at around 4.30pm.
