14 April 2016 - The GECT team from Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, UNIMAS had won the 1st Runner-up award in the World Citizenship category at Malaysia National Final for Imagine Cup 2016 competition. Imagine Cup is the world's premier student technology competition which is open to students 16 years old and above. The Imagine Cup Malaysia 2016 is held at the historical city of Melaka from 12 April 2016 to 14 April 2016. There are three categories in this competition: Games, Innovation and World Citizenship.

In the competition, GECT team had developed a mobile application to help local NGOs, namely FlyTech and WormingUp in their effort to collect the food waste from public. Food wastes that are not proper managed can be harmful to our environment, because it contributes in global warming and causes water pollution. The award winning mobile application developed by team GECT allows the public to inform the respective NGOs regarding leftover food and food waste by sending the photo and location of the leftover and food waste. These can assist the respective local NGOs in theirs efforts in collecting the inconsistent food waste or leftover food produced by the public.

FlyTech uses biotechnology to convert the food waste into high value protein for livestock consumptions. While WormingUp collaborate with SKUP in distributing surplus food to the urban poor, to reduce their burden. Through these efforts, they can help in reducing the global warming threat and water pollution caused by food waste decomposition.

GECT team is formed by 4 students, whom are:

Gerald Huang Ki Wei (2nd Year)– Team Leader Emily Huang Shin Ling (3rd Year) Chan Kok Yong (3rd Year) Tan Chia Chia (3rd Year)

The team was coached by Dr. Johari Abdullah, Dr. Cheah Wai Siang, and Mr. Lee Jun Choi for the competition. The team also receive generous advice and support from Mr. Wee Hung Yee, the CEO of FlyTech.
