KOTA SAMARAHAN : The Department of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), with the support of Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) and Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) have successfully conducted ‘1st UNIMAS International Nursing Students’ Conference, in conjunction with the ‘10th International Nursing Students’ Forum on the 9th and 10th March 2019.

The conference, organized by the final year nursing students, has broken an impressive record of international delegates as a celebration for their annually conducted conference’s 10th anniversary.

Held at DeTAR PUTRA, UNIMAS, this conference has drawn in internationally acclaimed speakers and delegate participation reaching 139 in total from countries such as China, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and Philippines. Adding up with local Malaysian participants, this student conference has racked up an astounding 638 delegates to celebrate the decade benchmark in their tradition.

Joining the conference as proud co-hosting partners were 16 international and local institutions: Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine and Guangxi University of Chinese Medicine from China; Khon Kaen University, Boromarajonani College of Nursing Sunpasitthiprasong Thailand, Suratthani Rajabhat University from Thailand; Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Kesihatan (STIK) Muhammadiyah Pontianak, Tanjungpura University, Faculty of Nursing Jamber University, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto, STIK Palembang, STIK Muhammadiyah Gombong, and Budi Luhur Institute of Health Sciences from Indonesia; Northern Negros State College of Science and Technology from Philippines, along with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Sarawak, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and ILKKM Kota Kinabalu from Malaysia.

Bearing the theme “A Voice to Lead: Health is a Human Right”, the 2-days conference serves as a platform for nurses to gather and share their ideas of current and future nursing leaders and how their voice can shape healthcare and its practice. As much as 54 free paper presentations, 48 poster presentations from students and staffs alike with 6 student innovative projects were presented in concurrent sessions in the conference.

Discussions were made regarding the accessibility of healthcare to a country’s citizen, and how certain less fortunate strata of citizens still face limited to no access to the government’s free or low-cost, and how are still unable to get the treatment they deserved. It was highlighted that it was high time nurses use their role in society as educators and advocators, to voice out concern and plan the best care one could possibly receive not just based on their social status and financial capabilities, but as their rights as humans. Subsidized healthcare was also discussed in the forum discussion among the speaker’s countries, whether if this trend will continue in the current world economical and political climate.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Julius Daño, one of the esteemed plenaries and forum speakers from the Cebu Normal University, Philippines has vocally touched upon the anti-vaccination movement debate in Malaysia, and what role nurses should play, to ensure that every human has acquired the necessary health treatment “ever since you are created in the womb”.

To continue the annual International Nursing Students’ Forum tradition, the next host selected among the executive meeting to conduct the 11th International Nursing Students’ Forum 2020 is Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

The conference was officiated by Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation) YBhg Profesor Dr Wan Hashim Wan Ibrahim. Also present, Dean of Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and fellow lecturers.
