KOTA SAMARAHAN, 8th March 2019: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kurume University, Japan at the Staff Lounge, University House, UNIMAS, this morning.
UNIMAS Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Professor Dr Wan Hashim Wan Ibrahim and President Kurume University, Mr Kensei Nagata were the signatories on behalf of their respective entities.
In his welcoming speech, Professor Dr Wan Hashim said UNIMAS have adopted various strategies for education and training in medicine and developing innovative approaches to educating doctors such as community based learning and problem solving.
He said, as medical education have undergone many changes and challenges over the last decade, traditionally education is about transmitting large amounts of technical and increasingly complicated knowledge to young minds.
“But mastering the reality of today does not prepare students for the challenges of tomorrow. Education of medical educators is critical to produce health professionals that meet global and national health challenges. The training must reflect the growing concerns of the influence lifestyle and the environment health as well to adept to the health care delivery systems in different regions and to meet people needs and expectations.
“Thus, the MoU between UNIMAS and KURUME today marks the latest step through the effort of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in establishing partners to address future challenges. We hope it would be able to serve as a platform for knowledge sharing as well as to cater for medical educators and medical specialist training,” he said.
Witnessing the MoU were UNIMAS Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Dean, Professor Dr. Ahmad Hata Rasit and Special Advisor to the President for International Relations and Regional Partnership, Professor Eiji Ohyano.
