KOTA SAMARAHAN, 16th May 2017 : More than 100 participants from various schools in the Southern Zone had attended Training and Industrial Awareness Program (TRIA) at UNIMAS on 14 – 15 May 2017 organized by The Workforce Development Unit (WDU), Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Bumiputera Sarawak (TEGAS) and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS).

TRIA at UNIMAS was initially officiated by UNIMAS Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs & Alumni), YBhg Prof Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman at CAIS Auditorium and also attended by respective faculty leaders on STEM related programs.

The purpose of this program is to create training and industrial awareness among students by connecting school, institution and industry. The objectives of the program are:

• To reach out, create awareness and develop interest in TVET & STEM

• To familiarize students with STEM-related courses, institutions and career pathways that matches Sarawak’s industrial needs

• To expose students to relevant industries and the different career opportunities that exist in the particular field

• To mentor, inspire and empower Form 3 students to make more informed decision about post PT3 training and education

• To support partner institutions in their promotion and recruitment efforts

TRIA filled with various interesting and engaging STEM-related activities which four faculties participated in hosting the activities, namely Faculty of Engineering (FENG), Faculty of Computer Science & Information Technology (FCSIT), Faculty of Resource Sciences & Technology (FRST) and Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences (FHMS).

At the Faculty of Engineering (FENG), the students are exposed to various engineering fields such as Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical & Electronic Engineering.

The activities at FENG include demonstration and hands-on activities on environmental engineering, fluid mechanics, robotics and digital & analogue electronics.

Students also enjoyed the Computer Science (CS) Unplugged activity at the Faculty of Computer Science & Information Technology (FCSIT).

CS Unplugged comprised of free learning activities that teach Computer Science through engaging games and puzzles that use cards, string, crayons and lots of running around.

Students then exposed to Biotechnology & Chemistry labs at the Faculty of Resource Sciences & Technology.

Moreover, at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, students participated in the demonstration and hands on activity of CPR & Human Anatomy.
