KOTA SAMARAHAN, 20th February 2017 : Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) officially launched its Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to the public, allowing anyone from anywhere in the world to access their specialized courses virtually for free.

With 14 MOOCs available thus far, and more to be released this year and in the near future, the university is set to lead the way in promoting flexible education to the masses while upholding the Sarawak values and the university’s niche areas.

The MOOCs include some Sarawak-inspired content such as Biodiversity and Animal Physiology, which showcases the state’s rich rainforest and exotic wildlife through the learning content produced by UNIMAS academics.

There are also MOOCs that highlight the multiculturalism within the region, namely Borneo Ethnography and Sarawak Malay Dialect, which is also the first MOOC in the world that offers opportunity for students worldwide to learn this dialect.

The MOOCs have now almost reached 20,000 enrolled students from various countries. UNIMAS MOOCs are accessible at www.openlearning.com/unimasmooc.

The event also included the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signing ceremony between UNIMAS and OpenLearning Global (M) Sdn Bhd, a leading MOOC platform provider that hosts the MOOCs produced by the university.

This MoA aims to create a close partnership between the two parties for the delivery of MOOCs and to grant certificates to students worldwide. The MoA with OpenLearning Global (M) Sdn Bhd was signed by UNIMAS Vice Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi, while OpenLearning Global (M) Sdn Bhd was represented by the CEO, Mr Adam Brimo.

The signing was witnessed by the Dean of the Centre for Applied Learning and Multimedia in UNIMAS, Associate Professor Dr Chen Chwen Jen and the Business Development Manager of OpenLearning Global (M) Sdn Bhd, Ms Suzana Mustafa.
