On 16 June 2021, PPV IPT UNIMAS upscaled from 1000 vaccinations per day to 3000 vaccinations per day. This was also the day that our PPV received the Sarawak Chief Minister, Yang Amat Berhormat Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, for a visit.

Arriving at 10.30 a.m. at Arena Gemilang, the Chief Minister was greeted by Yang Berhormat Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Deputy Chief Minister and Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) Chairman, Yang Berhormat Dato Sri Dr. Sim Kui Kian, Minister for Local Government & Housing Sarawak, Yang Berhormat Puan Rubiah Wang, UNIMAS Chairman Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong bin Matjeraie, our Vice Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi, our Hospital Pengajar UNIMAS & PPV IPT UNIMAS Director, Associate Professor Ehfa Bujang Safawi and the university’s higher management.

Operation was in full swing when the entourage stepped into Delima. Starting with a briefing on the QVAC system by Prof Dr Lo May Chiun, which is used for registration, the tour continued with a second briefing by Dr Helmy Hazmi on the vaccination procedures. YAB CM visited one of the vaccination booths before moving on to the observation area, the domain of Dr Desmond Weydon Ajong.

A press conference was held after the visit. During the press conference, the Chief Minister stated that by increasing the numbers of our vaccination centres, Sarawak can step up aggressively towards the 50,000 vaccinations per day target, consequently achieving a herd immunity by August this year.

The Chief Minister also clarified that there will be adjustments to vaccination centres, especially those located in the interior region. Water, land, and air mobile teams will be deployed to support our rural community. He rectified that on 17 June 2021, 110,380 vaccine supplies will be arriving for the Miri and Bintulu-Belaga regions. Meanwhile, 350,000 vaccines for Kuching are expected on 18 Jun 2021 to ensure sufficient vaccine distributions.

“The (state) government plans to set up Research Centre for Infectious Diseases which will be managed collaboratively by local specialists including UNIMAS’ experts and international bodies. This is a state project and was approved (on 15 June 2021). The centre will be located near the Sarawak Heart Centre.”

UNIMAS is proud to have our own Professor Datu Dr. Andrew Kiyu Dawie Usop, a lecturer with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and an esteemed member of Jawatankuasa Khas Bebas Darurat, to be involved with this project. The allocated budget for this international-standard centre is an astounding RM200,000,000.

Kita sik tauk apa gik penyakit yang akan datang.

As part of a state-wide endeavour to serve our community, the state plans to fund epidemiologists to advance and make our research centre globally visible. International network and recognition are crucial elements that one day can help us predict and manage risk and health eventualities.

Who knows, the next vaccine that saves the world will come from us in Sarawak.
