Selamat pagi, saya Dr. Nariman. Anda akan diberi vaksin jenis Sinovac.” The calming voice of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak’s (UNIMAS) trauma expert can be heard from the vaccination room on 14 June 2021, at 9:25 am. Hairullizam Azemi was the lucky number one receiver of the Sinovac vaccine at the UNIMAS Vaccination Center, officially known as the Pusat Pemberian Vaksin Institusi Pengajian Tinggi (PPV IPT) UNIMAS. This marks an important milestone for the university as the fight against the pandemic continues.

The official participation of UNIMAS in the National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme was declared in the Ministry of Higher Education press release dated 1 June 2021. PPV IPT UNIMAS was initially registered as a type 5 PPV which has the capacity of 1000 dosages per day. Soon, Professor Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim announced that the capacity has been updated to type 8 PPV which serves 1600 dosages per day, and on Friday, 18 June 2021, PPV IPT UNIMAS was upgraded to operate as a MEGA type PPV, administering up to 5000 vaccinations per day.

In a recent interview, Associate Professor Dr. Ehfa Bujang Safawi, the Director of UNIMAS Teaching Hospital and UNIMAS PPV, explained that with the current logistics, manpower, and in-house operating system, the PPV IPT UNIMAS is expected to operate at 3000 vaccinations per day for the first 4 days of its operation. The in-house powered vaccination programme makes the operations of the PPV unique and efficient.

PPV IPT UNIMAS is fully equipped to ensure that it is elderly and disability friendly. There are three main stations – registration/consultation, vaccination, and observation bay. There are also a sick bay and an on-site pharmacy. The PPV’s operating system, called QVAC, is an in-house queueing management system developed by UNIMAS’ researchers, Professor Dr Wang Yin Chai and team.

“The QVAC allows smooth flow through its fully automated queueing system that routes registration to vaccination to observation, online. Our logistics are strategised as such to ensure that UNIMAS is inclusive and sustainable,” the Director of UNIMAS Centre of Research and Innovation Management (RIEC), Professor Dr Lo May Chiun, clarified. The PPV IPT UNIMAS is the perfect platform to introduce the University’s research usability to the public.

The first day of the vaccination day shows promising potential, with a steady vaccination rate of 300 individuals per hour.
