UNIMAS goes virtual with Canada's University of Alberta

Kota Samarahan, September 18 – Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) achieved another significant milestone on the 17 September 2020 as the Vice Chansellor of UNIMAS, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohamad Kadim Suaidi signed the MoU between UNIMAS and the University of Alberta in first virtual MoU signing ceremony. The ceremony was held at 8 AM  (Malaysia time) between UNIMAS and University of Alberta (Alberta) (GMT -6, Canada time 6 PM).

The UNIMAS’s Institute of Social Informatics and Technological Innovations (ISITI) lead by Professor Dr Narayanan Kulathuramaiyer, and Alberta initially met during the 7th eBorneo Knowledge Fair (eBKF), which was held from 22-24 October 2019 in Ba’kelalan and Long Bawan. During the eBKF, common interests was recognized from information and experience sharing, particularly those relating to the participatory action research in the area of ICT for Development.

Through the interaction, the close relationships that UNIMAS has with communities across Sarawak and across the border come to light. From there, UNIMAS chalked out potential areas of collaboration, which included staff and student mobility, partnership activities, and collaborative research and publications.

The eBario project, which was initiated 2 decades ago by UNIMAS, has become a model for ICT 4 Development projects. The MoU will now enable joint initiatives to create value from the insights gained from the project. UNIMAS is looking forward to more exciting opportunities that will arise from this partnership.

The event was witness by the Deputy Vice Chansellor (Research & Innovation) Professor Dr. Wan Hashim Wan Ibrahim together with Dr Mohamad Suhaidi Salleh, Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences and the members of UNIMAS Global, head by Associate Professor Dr Shanti Faridah Salleh. Representatives from Alberta includes the members form the Faculty of Extension, lead by the Interim Dean, Dr. Maria Mayan; School of Public Health, Faculty of Arts (Department of Sociology, Department of Political Science), Ms. Danielle Scott, Director of the International Relations and Mr. Jinjia Xu the Regional Manager for Asia region.
