During the conference, Adrian Albert, fourth year counselling student was one of the committee members and was appointed Assistant for Public Relations and Protocol Department. Tasks include arranging opening and closing ceremony protocols and entertaining of VIP and guests. During the conference all of the participating universities sent one person to be a committee member during the conference.

Adrian presented topic of research was “Competency Issues of School Counsellors in Career Development for Adolescence” supervised by Dr Amalia Madihie as his final year project. The feedback from the audience was positive as he integrated basic Neuro-Linguistic Programming speaking style which was different from other speakers. This was well acknowledged by the lecturers and the crowd.

The experience of the conference was very positive. According to Adrian, the feelings and sense of belonging to the counselling profession increasingly became significant among the counselling trainees. In addition, mingling and having academic discussion, exchanging of ideas really help me to challenge him to greater heights and provide him an insight towards the future. The good thing about the experience was that being able to see different views and experiences of people coming together to increase the credibility of counselling graduates, to enhance knowledge and skills of what today’s world have to offer.

In conclusion, the 1st National Conference for Young Counselling Scholars (NC-YCS) was a success. Personally, a lot of insight and first hand experiences were gained. Adrian ended by saying his action plan in the future is to participate more in upcoming conferences held within the counselling theme and upgrade my own competency from time to time and he encourages all counselling trainees to grab the opportunity in the counselling networking at the beginning of their studies.
