Faculty of Engineering Reaches Out to Community in Long Lamai

Long Lamai – Faculty of Engineering answered the call from the Long Lamai community on their water supply and waste management issue through a NBOS project funded by UCTC “Program Penambahbaikan Bekalan Air dan Sistem Sanitasi untuk Masyarakat Penan di Long Lamai”. The facilities in this sustainable development project was designed and implemented by the staff of Faculty of Engineering, with assistance by 40 PALAPES UNIMAS personnel. This project involved knowledge transfer by guiding the villagers to construct, operate and maintain the facilities, as well as how the facilities function and ways to optimise their performance.

(i)         Biochar Reactor – Ir Dr Leonard Lim Lik Pueh, Dr Ivy Tan Ai Wei, Mr Karlvin Jungan

The biochar reactor is designed to enable the villagers to produce biochar from biomass which can be found in the vicinity of Long Lamai. If the reactor is not used for producing biochar, the combustion chamber can be used to burn other biomass, which would be safer and cleaner than that using open burning.

(ii)       Dry Composting Toilet – Ir Dr Leonard Lim Lik Pueh, Mr Kamri Mohamad

The dry composting toilet is designed and built to reduce the water demand, enable the human faeces management and reduce the pollution of groundwater and health threat especially water borne diseases. The compost can be further treated prior to be applied in soil as conditioner.

(iii)     Rainwater Harvesting – Dr Charles Bong Hin Joo, Mr Mohd Amirul Amit, Mr Mohd Hafiz Mafadi

The rainwater harvesting system is designed to increase their water supply by collecting rainwater using their roof. In addition, an intervention was done to improve the management of water supply in the water tank. This will likely reduce the community’s dependency on river water for water supply in the long term. The water supplied to the kitchen will be treated using a custom made water treatment unit to enable simple maintenance at predetermined intervals.

(iv)     Lifecycle Cost Assessment – Ir Dr Ting Sim Nee

A lifecycle cost assessment will be conducted to assess the cost incurred to implement and develop the facilities for a village.
