EnCon 2017 highlights greener and sustainable technology

KOTA SAMARAHAN, 13th September 2017: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) collaboration with Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Bumiputera Sarawak (TEGAS) is hosting the annual International UNIMAS STEM Engineering (EnCon) 2017 starting today until 15th September 2017, at Imperial Hotel, Kuching.

The conference is jointly hosted with Sarawak Education Department, American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Malaysian Chapter, Malaysian Research and Innovation Society (MyRIS) and The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) Sarawak Branch.

EnCon 2017 was officiated by Chief Minister of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg this morning with the theme of the conference is Gearing Towards a Greener Future.

Chief Minister has said the conference is seen timely as solutions to greener and sustainable technology advances are important specially to address the ever alarming environmental issues such as global issues on climate change and energy crisis.

“ Through this conference, I profoundly hope that the Faculty of Engineering, UNIMAS, with synergistic collaboration with TEGAS will continue to work in fulfilling the objectives of STEM Initiatives in Sarawak and in providing quality education to support the needs of our society, industry and the nations’ aspirations,” the Chief Minister hoped.

Vice-Chancellor of UNIMAS, Professor Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Hj Suaidi in his speech said  UNIMAS is instrumental in bringing various industry players and organizations in developing technologies and researches for the benefit of the society. 

“ Today, we shall witness Memorandum of Understandings to be exchanged between Faculty of Engineering UNIMAS with various key partners namely  The Institution of Engineers Malaysia; The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (Sarawak Branch); GeoCrete Specialist Sdn Bhd; The Welding Institute, United Kingdom; Universitas Pancha Bhakti, Pontianak, Indonesia; ACME Integrated Services Sdn Bhd, Turbowolf Resources Sdn. Bhd and Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

“ I personally believe that UNIMAS has played and will definitely continue to play a huge role in research and education for Sarawak. The university has been contributing and will continue to contribute to the development of the State,” he added.

Meanwhile, the conference also features five keynote addresses by Director of Solar Energy Research Institute, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Professor Dato’ Dr Kamaruzzaman Sopian, Sustainable and Renewable Energy Research Group (SURE), Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Professor Ir Dr Farid Nasir Ani,  National University of Singapore, Prof Dr Mustafizur Rahman, University of Picardie Jules Verne, France, Associate Prof Dr Pierre Barroy and Director, Centre for Engineering Education, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Prof Dr Khairiyah Mohd Yusof.

Over 80 technical papers will be presented in parallel sessions which also include STEM Workshops for 100 education officers and secondary school teachers of Sarawak.
