International Conference on Development, Environment and Society 2017 (ICDES17)

“Towards an Inclusive and Sustainable Future”

16 & 17 August 2016

Riverside Majestic Hotel, Kuching, Sarawak

ICDES a joint effort between the Departments of Development Studies and Anthropology at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak focuses on the exploration and assessment of the relationships between development, society and environment. ICDES aims to promote collaboration of cross-disciplinary research by providing an excellent opportunity to disseminate, share and discuss ideas towards an inclusive and sustainable development. ICDES also offer workshops, designed and led by expertise on Geographical Information System (GIS), Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and Community Engagement.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the conference are:

  • To provide a forum for people from diverse backgrounds and professions,
  • To share and exchange latest development and issues
  • To help establish partnership and collaboration in developing research and policy
  • To identify new research initiatives and establish alliances across disciplines nationally and internationally

CALL FOR PAPERS

We invited presenters to submit an abstract based on the following specifications:

  • The abstract should not be more than 250 words
  • Use Times New Roman, 12pt and 1.5 spacing
  • Provide title and keywords of your abstract
  • Indicate the presenter’s affiliation and country
  • Abstract should be written in English

WORKSHOP WE OFFER

(PARALLEL SESSION)

Time: 2.30-4.30 pm

WORKSHOP 1

ENVIROMENTAL AND SOCIAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT (ESIA)

Venue: Sarawak Chamber 2, Riverside Majestic Hotel, Kuching

Fee: RM 100

The workshop is design to provide an introduction to Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and its applications. The session starts by introducing the key principle of ESIA follows by the key processes and methodology in implementing ESIA.

TARGET PARTICIPANTS

This course will appeal to government officers from different agencies, state and local authorities, town planners and anyone who are involved in project assessment and project development.

 

WORKSHOP 2

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Venue: Sarawak Chamber 1, Riverside Majestic Hotel, Kuching

Fee: RM 80

The workshop offers the foundation for community engagement that addresses the many complexities involved between rural community and its partners. It provides participants with theoretical base and practical guide for engaging community needs, to mobilize community participation and to manage organizational support.

TARGET PARTICIPANTS

Government officers, researchers, academicians, agency workers, NGOs or anyone whose work requires interaction with people in Malaysian rural setting.

 

WORKSHOP 3

INTRODUCTION TO GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM

Venue: Lady Suite, Riverside Majestic Hotel, Kuching

Fee: RM 100

This workshop will introduce Geographical Information System (GIS) as a tool in policy making and development planning process. GIS is a discipline and technology which involves the acquisition, analysis and presentation of spatial data of the world. It provides the ability to analyze spatial and non- spatial information, especially for mapping, planning and monitoring development. Participants will learn how to use GIS in development planning and other related field of expertise.

TARGET PARTICIPANTS

Government officers, researchers, town planners, NGO and anyone who involved in project development.
