Community engagement has always been a priority for the Institute of Social Informatics and Technological Innovations (ISITI), as it is through close interaction with the community that a mutual relationship of trust and understanding can be formed and and fostered between researchers and community. This close relationship with the community has also been the key to the success of the many community based research projects that the insitute has spearheaded throughout Malaysia over the years.

Keeping this in mind, ISITI has again initiated another UNIMAS Go- Community initiative with the community at Kampung Teluk Melano, Sematan from 11-13 August 2017. A team of twenty researchers from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) will be participating in the three-day event in conjunction with the Program Negaraku Teluk Melano.

The UNIMAS team will be organising a creative educational workshop with the students of SK Teluk Melano, as well as working together with the community to clean up the beach in an effort to preserve the cleanliness and beauty of Teluk Melano. Apart from that, this programme will also introduce the local village culture to the international ISITI research fellows, staff and postgraduate students.

This community engagement initiative will also serve as a platform for both researchers and students to understand the dynamics involved in community based research, as they will be given the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding on the needs of the local community at Teluk Melano. It is also hoped that through this timely initiative, the researchers at ISITI will be able to continue working closely with the community on other endeavours in the near future.
