    KOTA SAMARAHAN, 2 March 2016 : The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) UNIMAS hosted the Inaugural Lecture by Professor Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit today at Dewan Syarahan, Pusat Islam Abang Salahuddin (PITAS), UNIMAS. 

    Professor Dr Ahmad Hata, Professor of Orthopaedic at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) is also a renowned expertise in in his field and recognised both locally and internationally.

    For his Inaugural lecture titled ‘Congenital limb deformity: replace, repair or remove’,  the lecture overview about orthopaedics problem as well as limb reconstructive surgery especially paediatrics orthopaedics. 

    According to Ahmad Hata, congenital limb deformity occurs in approximately six per 10,000 live birth, with prominently affected the upper limb compare to lower limb. 

    These defects are often with other birth defects involving the craniofacial, cardiac and genitourinary systems. 

    “It is due to multiple causes range from infectious, chemical, genetic, environmental or combination of them,”he said.

    Professor Dr Ahmad Hata said it is also classified by one or combination of following mechanism, arrest of developmental, failure of differentiation, duplication, overgrowth or other.

    His Excellency Victor Samuel Ngele

    7 April 2016 - The High Commissioner of Solomon Highlands, His Excellency Victor Samuel Ngele paid a courtesy visit to UNIMAS today. The visit is the first by Solomon Islands to UNIMAS, and it is intended to establish a relationship with the university, particularly for undergraduate studies opportunities and other relevant academic collaborations.

    Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Prof Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman welcomed His Excellency Victor Samuel Ngele and chaired the discussion. During the session, His Excellency exchanged a lot of ideas with Faculty Deans and other representatives. His Excellency Victor Samuel Ngele was also given a campus tour by the UNIMAS International team led by Assoc Prof Dr Souba Rethinasamy

    UNIMAS looks forward to receiving students from Solomon Islands and to work together on mutually beneficial collaborations in the near future.

    KOTA SAMARAHAN, 11 April 2016 : The Faculty of Resource Science and Technology (FSTS), UNIMAS today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with My Innovation Hub (MyInnoHub) for a greater collaboration in Sago research. The memorandum was signed by Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs & Alumni), Prof Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman on behalf of UNIMAS and Chief Executive Officer of MyInnoHub, Vincent Wong Wai Sang from MyInnoHub. It was also witnessed by the Dean of Faculty of Resource Science and Technology, Assoc. Prof Dr Othman Bojo and Chief Executive Officer of Regal International Group, Dato’ Dominic Su.

     

    In his welcoming speech, Professor Mohd Fadzil highlighted the strong interest in Sago research which have been pursued by UNIMAS researchers at the Faculty of Resource Science and Technology, and that he was pleased that MyInnoHub was keen to collaborate with the university, based on an initial presentation conducted by the team on the 29th of February 2016.

     

    The MoU with MyInnoHub focuses on two UNIMAS research products; first is the research on Sago from upstream plantation, harvesting and processing till downstream glucose production, sound absorber and others; the second is on research on road construction ...

    KUCHING : Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) inked a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Eye Specialist Centre (ESC) Kuching yesterday to bring enhanced eye of ophthalmology services to the state.

    The MoA was signed by UNIMAS vice cancellor Prof Dato Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi while ESC was represented by its medical director Dr Dennis Kong and director Dr Tiong Tung Hui.

    BN candidate for Asajaya Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah witnessed the signing.

    Kadim said the collaboration marked another milestone for UNIMAS, especially its Medicine and Health Science Faculty.

    “The enhanced service in the important sub-specialties of complex glucoma and vitreo-retinal / retina surgery services will complement existing ophthalmology services in the state,” he said.

    Kadim added the collaboration would provide a good platform for research and training to benefit students, lecturers, medical practitioners and the community, in general.

    “All these efforts are vital towards contributing to the advancement of the standard and quality of eye care, through new discoveries, innovation of new treatments and surgical techniques.”

    PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Integrated Medical Association (Mimpa) president Dr Dhesi Baha Raja has been recognised as among the top young health innovators by Harvard University.

    Dr Dhesi who was given the award for his work on artificial intelligence in medical epidemiology had been recognised as among the top eight young innovators globally in the field by Harvard University’s School of Public Health, beating over 200 applications.

    Dr Dhesi who leads a his team of six, developed AIME (Artificial Intelligence in Medical Epidemiology), which is a disease-prediction mobile platform that employs technology and data to give people prior warning of when outbreaks might occur three months in advance and locating them within a 400 meter radius.

    He told the Star Online that he was glad that Malaysia is being recognised for its contribution to the international medical community.

    Despite winning awards from numerous institutions worldwide, this is the first award that his team has received from the United States.

    “I think its good because we want recognition in this part of the world (North America) for our work,” he said.

    CML Committees

    Sarawak Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) Day for 2016 was held on 24th September. This event was carried out in Auditorium A of University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) City Campus. Altogether 28 participants involved including 6 participants/caretakers from Miri and Bintulu, who were sponsored flight and accommodation. Participants were not charged for any fees as it could be a barrier to participation.

    This was the first time Faculty Medicine & Health Science (FMHS), UNIMAS organized this event. This year's CML Day aimed to provide CML knowledge to CML patients and caretakers. At the same time, the event aimed to bring them together and form a support group that at least will have annual gathering to do some outdoors activities together and to know new information regarding the disease and drugs.

    One month prior to this program, volunteers from Year 5 Medical Students 2016/2017 were gathered and each of committees were assigned a task such as Master of Ceremony(MC), audio video team, kids team, interviewer and reporter team, IT team, reception and gifts team and many more.     SMK Batu Lintang scores golds and silvers in science, technology and engineering competition

    Make way for these brilliant young innovators!

    Five SMK Batu Lintang students representing four teams scored great wins for their school at the national level competition for Innovation, Science, Technology and Engineering 2016 (Pertandingan Inovasi Sains, Teknologi dan Kejuruteraan Peringkat Kebangsaan 2016 – Pistek) held at Langkawi Vocational College, Kedah from Nov 17 to 19.

    Competing in the individual project category was SMK Batu Lintang student Isaac Chung (16) who was won a Gold Award and emerged as the champion in the individual project category for his project ‘Sabah Snake Grass-Nature’s Way of Healing’.

    His project aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Clinacanthus nutans (belalai gajah) leaf extract as an anti-bacterial agent for pathogenic skin microbiota in wound dressing, especially Methicillin-resistant Staphylococccus aureus (MRSA), a strain of fast-spreading antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

    Working on this project from June to October 2016 under the mentorship of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences senior lecturer Dr Isabel Fong, Isaac said that it sparked his interest in doing environment and medical-based research that can be used to help people in the future.

    KOTA SAMARAHAN, 23 March 2017 : A Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) has been signed between Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and Academy For Silent Mentor (AFSM) today to set up silent mentor centre in UNIMAS campus in Kota Samarahan.

    The establishment of the silent mentor centre are next to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in Kota Samarahan will serve as a complementary training centre for medical and nursing programs.

    During MoA signing ceremony, UNIMAS was represented by Vice Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi and AFSM was represented by Chairman and Founding Director AFSM, Professor Dr Chin kin Fah.

    “ We believe that the centre will nurture good humanistic values and empathy amongst the medical students in UNIMAS which are inspired by selfless acts of the donors. It will serve as a resource centre for their anatomy and basic surgical skills as well as soft skills module as the students will be the volunteers at the centre,” said UNIMAS Vice Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi.

    KOTA SAMARAHAN: It is the duty of medical practitioners to recognise certain clinical forensic cases that have medicolegal consequences and alert the relevant authorities.

    Assistant Minister of Public Health Datuk Dr Jerip Susil said every medical practitioner at any time during their practice, be it in the government or private setting, would have encountered such cases.

    According to him, cases that can be considered as medicolegal cases include all cases of injuries and burns, for which the circumstances suggest commission of an offence by a person; all vehicular, factory or other unnatural accident cases especially when there is a grievous hurt or fatal injury; cases of suspected or evident sexual assault; cases of suspected or evident criminal abortion; cases of unconsciousness where its cause is not natural or not clear; all cases of suspected or evident poisoning or intoxication;

    cases referred from court or otherwise for age estimation; cases brought dead with improper history creating suspicion of an offence; or cases of suspected self-infliction of injuries or attempted ...
